RESUMO

The term " Information Culture " is recent although the use of information has been developping since the arrival of the communication and technologies information (ICT) that have drastically changed our lives and conveyed us into the information and the networks era. In this context, we must become aware of this reality, wonder about the existing informational culture in the training of people, employees, managers and professionals of the infocom in order to be able to develop it. The use of information is studied within the framework of small and medium-sized (SME) Brazilian firms (staff range of 10 to 200) with the aim of transforming it into knowledge, applying it in strategies and obtaining though competitive advantages in a globalized world. The information culture is analyzed at first through the level of development of the information society in which these companies are implemented. Are also focused the existence and the assistances of governmental and professional institutions interested in SME development. The study refers to the companies level of conscience in what concerns the use of information, their infocom equipment, their collection capacity, the management of the informational estate etc. Then the approach reports on the existing difficulties in getting the information available on the market, the technical, human, financial means etc. Two enquiries and many interviews were carried out as well as a guidebook about information sources and a theoretical framework to contribute to a better comprehension of the information culture concept according to the model of this research and the construction of a tool related to SME.
