RESUMO

Khamailéon is a fantasy for guitar and orchestra by Brazilian composer Almeida Prado (b. 1943). This is the first work he wrote for this instrument, within a repertoire that encompasses both solo and chamber pieces. It was written in 1970, when the composer was studying with Olivier Messiaen in Paris. It has an atonal language, with post-1950 European aesthetic influences. The piece’s name refers to the mimetism in the materials between the guitar and the orchestra, as a chameleon assimilates the colors around it. Khamailéon has never been performed due to a number of factors, not least of which are the conditions of the manuscript, its only existing source so far. Thus, our work mainly aims to encourage and enable its performance through the review and digitalization of its score and a discussion involving its historical, stylistic, structural and interpretative aspects. This dissertation is divided into four chapters, each of which presents specific results. The first chapter contextualizes the composer and his work, from a historical-stylistic point of view, regarding the period between the decades of 1950 and 1970. The second focuses on the structural aspects of each of the six movements, in order to unveil the process of mimetism in the materials. The third presents the first edition, critical and revised, with all the changes properly justified. At last, the fourth chapter presents our interpretative conception, based on the contents developed in the earlier chapters.
