RESUMO

The intention of rescuing and discussing the principles and values which gave origin to Judo, since its creation until today and worried about so-called changes, without a clearly defined objective, on the contrary, tarnishing the principles of Judo, brought me to this study. For a long time the philosophical principles of Judo have been left aside in Brazilian schools, gyms and universities. The samurais were the biggest defenders of the ethical principles of Judo and for this reason, they had a Code of Ethics, which in spite of not being written, was highly respected by them. The martial practice of the samurais was accompanied by religious rituals which aimed to their spirituality. They believed that practice was the way to such spirituality. The ethical principles, philosophical and religious, were incorporated in the Judo Kodokan, legitimate heir of the ancient jiu-jitsu. With this objective, we initially carried out a bibliographical revision which permitted a deepening into the historical matters of traditions and principles inherited by Judo Kodokan, founded by Professor Jigoro Kano in 1882. The other part were the interviews of Judo instructors, with over twenty years of professional experience and of the Judo athletes, with experience in national and/or international competitions, who had not been pupils or athletes of the professors object of this study. The methodology was based on a clinical quantitative research. The interviews were semi-guided and consisted of the following question: What is Judo? After the interviews with the professors and athletes, which were recorded on cassette tapes, the relative transcriptions were made. Soon afterwards, very much reading was done in order to carry out the categorization of the meanings found in the speeches of the professors and athletes interviewed. The interpretations of the study were carried out through the content analysis technique and contextual historical analysis, as well as through the observations and bibliographical references. In the end of the analysis and discussions of the results, we were able to confirm that the professors in general, know about the existence of the philosophical principles, not being clear however, how they learned about them. In regard to the athletes, the same phenomenon was observed. We understand that its natural that the youngsters like to compete, since in our youth it wasnt any different. It also became very evident that the professors and athletes molded their behavior, according to their times.
