RESUMO

Abstract The objective of this article is to present an analysis of the appropriation of the right to a life free of violence, between female university students in the rural area of the Valle del Mezquital region, in Hidalgo state, Mexico; through their autonomy exercised in the private sphere and the relationship which this has with their integration in higher education. This study has a qualitative approach; in the months of september and october 2017, eight interviews were carried out with four focus groups composed of students from the Law and Psychology degrees, in the Escuela Superior de Actopan of the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo. The autonomy concept was used as a category to analyse the appropriation of the right to a life free of violence. The female students attend university in oppressive conditions, therefore, they appropriate their right to a life free of violence partially. Attending clases in the university involves receiving violence from their family, which demonstrates gender inequality, and thus, limits their autonomy. On the other side, the university turns into an element for the construction of autonomy, since it is a personal space they defend. It is necessary to work on the isolated actions the female students take in response to the violence in their private sphere, for that purpose, it is required to strenghten social and political mechanisms which allow to promote and guarantee their access to higher education in conditions of freedom from violence.
