RESUMO

"Jongo", classified by the scholars who have researched the matter within the generical category of black dance, has not been deeply studied. The existing studies comprise short descriptions of the dance body movements and the ritual, lacking studies in the social sciences scope. The study herein presented, of an anthropological stamp, proposes deepening the knowledge of that practice using the performance of the practicings as a conductor wire of the research. We propose learning the social interactions that take place during the "jongo" practice, presenting an ethnographical record of its present configuration in one of the locals of Vale do Paraiba Paulista, the neighborhood Tamandare, located in the Guaratingueta-SP municipality. This study, presented in four chapters, comprises an effort to articulate context domains where the "jongo" practice is inserted. Thus, we start from analyzing the cycle of feasts that take place in Tamandare going to, in the following chapter, the dynamic in the neighborhood analyzing the social interactions that occur among its dwellers. Further on, we discuss the religiosity [devotion] issue of the "jongo" dancers in an analysis articulated with the "jongo" practice and the way they live this "jongo"-religiosity [devotion] relation them. In the fourth chapter, there is an analysis of the alterity relations that are established in the situations faced by the Tamandare "jongo" dancers along with other social segments. From the data collected in the field, it is demonstrated how "jongo" serves as a distinctive signal for the Tamandare dwellers, rendering them possible negotiations with the local society
