RESUMO

The periodontal disease has as etiological factor the accumulation of dental biofilm associated to the host susceptibility on the dental surface. The nonsurgical mechanical treatment, which includes scaling and root planing, is considered standard therapy for therapy of periodontal disease. Several anti-inflammatory and anti bacterial agents have been used as adjuncts to the mechanical therapy. The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the effect of subgingival irrigation in periodontal pockets with hydroalcoolic propolis 20% as to the clinical parameters as adjuncts to periodontal therapy. Eighteen individuals diagnosed with chronic periodontitis presenting at least probing depth 5 mm in two sites were selected. The individuals were divided into two groups: Test Group (TG) 65 teeth (scaling and root planing and irrigation with propolis 20% solution); and Control group (CG) 62 teeth (scaling and root planing and irrigation with saline solution). Both groups received a second irrigation after 15 days of the baseline. Clinical parameters such as probing depth (PD), plaque index, gingival index and oral hygiene index were recorded at the baseline and after 45, 75 and 90 days. Both groups showed significant reductions in probing depth following therapy. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the TG and the CG as to PD when compared in the baseline in relation to the others periods. It was concluded that irrigation with propolis 20% solution as an adjunct in periodontal treatment was more effective than the saline solution at the mechanical treatment in periodontal disease.
