RESUMO

A fluidized-bed biomass gasification pilot-plant was developed and tested, aiming at rural development and sustainable communities. Gasification is a means to increase the efficiency of the energetic use of biomass and allow that its chemical energy be converted into useful mechanical energy and fiom that into electricity. The pilot-plant consists on a gasifier with internal diameter of 400mm and total high of 4600mm coupled to a spark ignition engine of 6 cylinders, firstly developed for use with natural gas. The equipment was tested for sugar-cane bagasse and rice-husk gasification, looking for the best operational condition for power generation. The work present the altematives of thermal engines for converting the producer gas into useful energy and the way to adapt them for working on such gas. The project fies in the themes of decentra1ised electricity generation, rural development and sustainable communities, which are also herein developed.
