RESUMO

Soil subsidence is a serious phenomenon that consists in ground settlement caused by fluid removal from the soil and underneath layers with reduction of the soil support capacity. Several metropolitan regions have damage due to subsidence occurrence. Many countries have registered subsidence cases due to groundwater overexploitation in sedimentary and carst aquifers, and in some research projects these studies have been carried out for several decades. Within this investigation the Global Positioning System (GPS) was studied to be used for monitoring of small ground settlement, as the settlements occurred in soil at the beginning of land subsidence. The use of high precision GPS as a monitoring strategy for verifying the soil subsidence occurrence, once the necessary infra-structure has been totally established, allows a faster and cheaper monitoring than topographic survey techniques. A topical review related to soil subsidence due to groundwater exploitation is presented in this work, including occurrence types, inve stigated cases around the world and tools for investigation of the physical phenomenon. A description about the study area, located at Boa Viagem area in Recife city, is given and topics related to climate of the region, to geology, to hydrogeology and to groundwater exploitation are explained. It follows a topical review at geodetic methods that are applied for monitoring soil subsidence. Two experiments realized in Germany for the height control using high precision GPS are described. The results are analysed in detail and provide an important basis for the implantation of a monitoring network for soil subsidence in Boa Viagem, in the Recife Metropolitan Region
