RESUMO

This dissertation is inc1uded in the research line of Reading and Composition and its theme is the role of intertextuality in the construction of the meanings of a text. By assuming that the co-textual relations do not cape with the production of the meanings on the reader s part, we aim at defining strategies which allow us to work with intertextuality in reading situations. Thus, this research is justified by the importance of establishing intertextual strategies for what can not be intratextually determined. For that reason, the first step was searching for the theoretical principIes that grounds the intertextual aspect as a social construction, considering the works of Bakhtin (1929), Kristeva (1977), Jenny (1979), Beaugrande and Dressler (1981), Maingueneau 0987), Koch (1989), Bloome and Egan-Robertson (1993), Maybin and Moss (1993), Marquesi (1994), Zanotto (1995) and Palma (1998). Next, the analysis of the contextual products of the work which constitutes the corpus of my research, Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma, by Lima Barreto, determines its themes and selects contemporary texts with related thematic which allow the establishment of intertextual and interdiscursive relations. Following, an empiric investigation was carried out as a means of verifying how readers build the meaning of a text through other texts, evidencing how this reading practice enlarges significantly its respective universes ofknowledge. The results thus obtained showed that reading contemporary texts, extracted from Folha de São Paulo and from magazines such as Veja, Isto é and Problemas Brasileiros, along with the verbal interaction interposed between the examination of Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma and the activity of re-textualization, constitute, in fact, the strategies that grant the practice of intertextuality, which may be socially built by the relation that the readers establish between one text and another during the verbal interaction. Therefore, the accomplished research, by endorsing the importance of a reading task which considers intertextuality as an available process to be established in the dynamics of verbal interaction, brings contributions to the teaching of the Portuguese language and opens several perspectives for new investigation in the field.
