RESUMO

Body composition was studied in 111 lactating women for three month and their infants, divided in two groups, adolescents and adults, with ages varying from 13 to 19 and from 20 to 29 years old, respectively. The variables analyzed were anthropometric measurements (weight, skin fold thicknesses at four sites - biceps, triceps, subscapular and suprailiac - and midarm circumference), maternal age, maternal height, maternal weight gain, preconception weight, postpartum weight, gynecological age, age of menarca, gestational age (weeks), education, marital status, basic sanitation, feeding method, sex of the infant, gestational age by Capurro, time of weaning, birth-weight, length. Anthropometric measurements were evaluated through the model of regression with aleatory coefficients, for the development of the longitudinal study with measurements taken at different number and period. Measurements of weight and subscapular skin fold thickness decreased significantly for the two groups in the time frame studied, as well as measurements of body mass index and fat mass. Midarm muscle circunference and lean body mass decreased in the period indicating fluid loss statistically significant (p = 0.0006) and (p <0.0001), respectively in the two groups. Adult mothers always presented higher values of body composition. Infants did not present significant differences between the two groups. Index of exclusive breast-feeding was 69.8% and 68.9% for adolescents and adults, respectively. Results suggest that being an adolescent mother does not affect the infant development, nor does it differ from adult-women in fat mobilization and water displacement in postpartum period.
