RESUMO

Among the 88 sleep disorders, insomnia is the most common. An epidemiological, analytical and transversal cut study was done to detect the prevalence of insomnia and the use of hypnotics in the inhabitants of the urban area of Campo Grande, MS, Brazil, of ages from 18 or over. 408 domiciliar interviews were done using randomized sampling stratified for gender and age. The interviews were conducted by a questionnaire under the consent of the subject. The subjects were divided into two groups according to the criteria of Asda (1997): insomniacs and non-insomniacs. The first in ones, insomniacs with sleep initiation disorders (DIS), those with sleep maintenance disorders (DMS), and early arousing disorder ones (DDP); those with acute problems (up to 1 month of duration) and chronic ones (over 1 month); the ones with light, moderate, and severe problems. The groups were compared for age, gender, marital status, schooling level, social-economical situation, occupation, regular use of hypnotics and who have prescribed them, and use of alternative means to sleep better. For the statistical analysis, descriptive methods were used and qui-square (?2), Fisher test, inferences based on parameters of binomial distribution. The significance level was 5% and the confidence interval of 95%. The general prevalence of insomnia was 19,1%(sd=2,0%), prevalent DIS (p=0,0043) and chronic (p=0,7022), more in women (p=0,0015) of low schooling level (0,0317). In the last month 6,9% (sd=1,3%) used hypnotics and from these 68,1 % over 3 times a week; in the life span 17,2% (sd=1,9%) from which 70,3% in the last 2 years. Both in the last month and along the life among the users of hypnotics there was the predominance of insomniacs (p<<0,0001), women (p=0,0372 and p<0,0001) and over 30 years of age (p=0,0536 and p= 0,0091); the great majority with doctor?s prescription (91,4%, with no prevalence of specialty) and 36,8% (sd=2,4%) had the habit of using alternative means to sleep better, being the most prevalent habit to ingest some kind of beverage; this habit occurred among insomniacs (p<<0,0001). There was a high prevalence of insomnia and the use of hypnotics in Campo Grande, Brazil, showing the need of new national studies involving this important issue of public health
