RESUMO

Pupal mortality of Brassolis sophorae and Opsiphanes invirae was studied across a center-suburbs gradient in the city of Campinas in relation to the site of attachment od the pujpae (interaction, and the use of the soil in regional and local scales. The analysis consisted of the examination of the pupal exuviae, systematically collected at 75 sampling points in the urban area. In each point, several environmental parameters were estimated, such as percent plant cover, built up area and distance from the city center in order to evaluate their possible influence on the mortality of the lepidopterans studied. In the vicinity of the university campus studies on the adult mortality of Brassolis sophorae were undertaken emphasizing the mortality of these insects during ecdysis. Analysis of the contents of the parasitized pupae provided data on the mortality of the natural enemies of Brassolis (Spilochalcis morleyi-Chalcididae and Xanthozona melanopyga-Tachinidae). Approximately 19000 Brassolis pupae and 1200 Opsiphanes pupae were collected. The pincipal conclusions of this research are: a) Analysis of pupal exuviae proved to be an excellent method for assessing the different causes of pupal mortality the mortality agent could be surely determined in over 85% of the pupae studied ...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
