RESUMO

The aim of this study was evaluate the influence of the breast and bottle feeding in the electrical activity of the orbicularis oris (upper) and mentalis musc1es in 12 children ftom 2,5 to 3,5 years old, with good systemic and oral health. The children were classified in two groups, one with 6 children who were breastfed during six month after birth and the second with 6 children who were not breastfed or at least breastfed till the second month after birth, The electrical activities were evaluated in sucking of water, yogurt, and chocolate cream, using two pairs ofbipolar surface electrodes. It was used the acquisition signal system (Condicionador de sinal, model MCS- V2, Lynx Tecnologia Eletrônica Ltda.) and Software Aqdados, version 4.18 (Links Tecnologia Electrônica Ltda). Data analysis was carried out by the linear envoltory curve and by the RMS (root mean square), using the EMGll, EMG12 and EMG126 MATLAB routines. For the statistical analysis were used GraphPad Instal, version 3,01 and Graph Pad Software, applying the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis tests and ANOVA. In accordance with the results, the conc1usions were: by the linear envoltory analysis, breastfeeding influences establisment of the orbicular oris (upper) and mentalis musc1es electrical activity pattern. The orbicularis oris (upper) presented higher electrical activity statistically significant for children who were not breastfed and the mentalis showed higher activity in children who were breastfed, with alI beverages. The orbicularis oris presented higher electrical activity statistically significant for both groups in following decrease sequence: water, yogurt and chocolate cream, while the sequence for the mentalis musc1e was yogurt, chocolate cream and water for the breastfed group and chocolate cream, water and yogurt for the not breastfed group with statistical significant differences. In the same grouP. the comparison between the muscles, breastfed children showed higher electrical activity for the mentalis musc1e; than the orbicularis oris (upper), statistically significant. The other group presentec higher activity for the orbicularis oris (pper) in relation to the mentalis musc1e, witl statistical significant difference. By the RMS values there was statistical significan1 difference between the groups in relation to the orbicularis oris (upper) activity in the yogurt sucking, higher than the mentalis. There was not difference among the other variables as observed in the linear envoltory analysis.
