RESUMO

The aim of the present study was: to verify what method(s) and resource(s) of dental caries diagnostic are the best to epidemiological research, and which of the twelve epidemiological exams show clinical results similar to the clinical exam performed in a traditional dental setting; to analyze the impact of including enamel caries (EC) in epidemiological examinations in the estimation of the dental caries indices. The study was constituted by 51 students of 12 years of age, divided in groups of low, moderate and high dental caries prevalence. They were submitted to 12 epidemiological exams performed in outdoor setting, resulted of the combination of visual and visual/tactile methods with or not auxiliary resources (brushing and drying) and 1 exam performed in a traditional dental setting. Statistical analysis was carried out through the Variance Analysis, Dunnet, and Tukey tests. According to WHO s criteria, the best methods for dental caries diagnosis were: CPI explorer, buccal mirror (visual/tactile), with or without previous dental brushing and drying for both groups with low and moderate caries prevalence; buccal mirror (visual) associated or not to the use of explorer (visual/tactile), with or without previous dental brushing and dental drying, for group with high caries prevalence. Furthermore, WHO s method is adequate for epidemiological exams for dental caries. In order to diagnose dentin caries, previous dental brushing showed to be more relevant than previous dental drying. When compared to exams carried out in a traditional dental setting, epidemiological exams using different combinations, such as buccal mirror and CPI explorer with or without previous dental brushing and drying (low and moderate caries prevalence groups), buccal mirror and previous dental brushing with or without previous dental drying, (moderate caries prevalence group), and finally, all of the epidemiological exams, except those with spatula without previous dental brushing (high caries prevalence group ), showed no statistical differences. According to EC exams, previous dental drying or the association of previous dental drying with brushing all improved diagnosis significantly. However, in relation to EC diagnosis, all of the epidemiological exams presented statistical differences to those carried out in a traditional setting, for the three caries prevalence groups
