RESUMO

This study has the purpose of evaluate the effects of the substitution of natural sand by artificial sand, in self-compacting concrete (SCC). The natural sand, which is a usual component of concretes, has becoming more and more rare due to the deplete of deposits located close to the huge urban centers, as well as the extraction?s restrictions imposed by environmental organizations. Therefore, the artificial sand becomes an alternative for the use of natural sand in concretes, even though this sand produces different effects on concrete than those caused by natural sand. To analyze the effects of artificial sand on SCC, on fresh and hardened states, the study was shared on steps: paste, mortar and concrete. Tests to verify the properties of SCC were performed on fresh and hardened states. Firstly, the evaluation of SCC produced only with natural sand was held, being considered a reference parameter. After that, the substitution of natural by artificial sand was made, being the results compared with the reference. It was also analyzed the effect of the substitution of percentages of natural sand. The relation between self-compactability of mortars and concretes were observed. All the concretes produced had a consumption of cement between 300 e 380 kg/m³ and compressive strength, at 28 days, higher than 30 MPa. The obtained results show that, considering the artificial sand used, it is possible the substitution of 30% of natural sand, in SCC, by artificial sand. At the hardened state, an increase on density and mechanical strength was verified to concretes with 15% of fly ash as mineral admixture. A comparative analysis between self-compacting mortars and concretes allowed the conclusion that the study on mortars is worth to define initial parameters to concrete production.
