RESUMO

The aim of this study was to verify the influence of the oral rehabilitation, with removable prosthesis, on muscular and functional alterations in children in mixed dentition. The sample consisted of thirty children, aged between 5.5 and 6.5 years old, distributed in two groups: Group I, with sixteen children without oral removable prosthetic rehabilitation need. Group lI, with fifteen children with indication of removable partial prosthesis in the superior or/and inferior arches. The groups were submitted to examination of bite force, masticatory efficiency and electromyography of the anterior portion of the temporal and of the masseter muscle before the restorations or prosthetic treatment (p0), one month after (p1) and six months after (p2) it. The maximum bite force was determined using a pressurized tube of reinforced fiber, positioned on molar deciduous, and the child was instructed to bite with maximal force. Masticatory efficiency was evaluated by mastication of a silicone tablet (Optocal), using the sieves method to determine the specific mass of the chewed particles. Electromyography register was performed in maximum isometric contraction of jaw closing and, in habitual chewing of the Optocal material. Data analyses were carried out by the Student t test, Tukey test and Pearson correlation. Group I presented an average of bite force significant higher than Group II in p0 and p 1 (p<0, 01), but in p2 there was no difference between the groups. Between the stages of evaluation, only Group II presented significant increase of bite force values after six months of the treatment. In relation to the masticatory efficiency, it was found significant difference (p<0,0001) between the three stages of the research in both groups and, between them, it was only found difference in p2, being higher for group 11. Electromyographic data showed the Group I presented electric activity significantly lower_than Group II in p0 for the right and left temporal muscle (p
