RESUMO

Water comprises 70% of body weight. An excellent solvent, water can transport chemicals, germs and parasites that represent a potential risk to a populations health if it is not potable in accordance with established standards. The Santa Rita district of Ouro Preto does not have a public water supply with a conventional treatment process. Therefore this study evaluated the water quality of the system and verified the critical influence of the system on the nutrition of the children 3 to 6 years old. Between July 2003 to April 2004, 67 waters samples per month were collected at selected points along the system. The waters samples were subject to physical, chemical and bacteriologic analysis. The physical and chemical analysis showed that the parameters turbidity, pH, and residual chlorine were not adequate. 99 children were evaluated for nutritional status and parasitic infections. Intestinal parasites that could be transmitted by water were present in their feces: Giardia lamblia (2,4%), Ascaris lumbricoides (10,7%) and Entamoeba coli (15,5%). The childrens nutritional status was within acceptable standards, but the quality of water could prove detrimental if a better treatment system is not provided.
