RESUMO

Environmental noise pollution resulting from the combination of various noise sources, such as, alarms, sirens, commercial activities and services, religious temples, industries, civil engineering works and the traffic of automobile vehicles, have increased the level of urban noise and contributed to the appearance of sound environments that are more and more unpleasant. At present it has been considered as one of the most common environmental problem by degrading the environment and impairing the quality of life. The evaluations of environmental noise by acoustic mapping and prediction may be useful to the extent that they may allow for a visualization and quantification of environmental noise, thus contributing for a suitable planning of urban sound environment. The main objective of this study is to verify in what way the interaction between the noise sources and the urban form exert their influence on a certain sound environment by using the district of Jardins in the city of Aracaju (Sergipe) as an experimental field. A study was proposed based on the application of software for acoustic mapping and prediction. At first, the current acoustic scenery was analyzed and then, the hypothetical sceneries created and simulated in places not yet occupied in the area. In the acoustic modeling and simulation, local avenue vehicle traffic was considered as the main noise source by using traffic acoustic data and geometrical features of the area, as surveyed during the first semester of 2005. The results show that the physical features of urban form, such as building density, existence of open areas, form and disposition of buildings, influence the sound propagation in open air and therefore, in the sound environment of a certain area. The information presented in this work may be used in the planning and designing of cities regarding acoustic comfort
