RESUMO

In the present study, 301 post-menopausal women were evaluated. They were 50 years of age or over and lived in Distrito Federal. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of obesity on cognitive function. Methods: Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE), adapted by Brucki et al. (2003) to be used in Brazil, was taken to assess the cognitive function of post menopausal women. The participants were grouped by age and educational level range as well as anthropometric indexes to characterize obesity, such as: body mass index, body fat mass percentage, waist circumference, waist-hip ration, conicity index, attempting to associate obesity to cognitive function impairment. Results: The data shows that age does not influence the general score for MMSE in post-menopausal women (p=0,07), while educational level has a strong impact on it (p=0,001); as well it has over its specific sections, although it does not have any impact over the memory (0,70). When the influence of obesity on the cognitive function was evaluated, measured by MMSE, it was identified this condition, specially, the central one, seems to cause impairment to cognitive function, specifically, to the memory. Conclusion: Obesity, specifically the central one, is associated to impairment to cognitive function, mainly, to the memory, in post-menopausal women.
