RESUMO

The author examined 2,500 children born in the Casa Maternal Santa Monica, Hospital Memorial Arthur Ramos and Santa Casa de MisericÃrdia de Maceià from July 2002 to June 2003 in order to ascertain the incidence of congenital orthopedic anomalies in these hospitals. The only inclusion criterion used was the clinical examination. The inviable newborns and the high risk newborns who needed UTI care were excluded of this paper. The total incidence of anomalies was 2.88%, 1.12% being major anomalies and 1.76% minor ones. It was concluded that the incidence of congenital anomalies corresponds to that encountered in the literature. It was also concluded that congenital clubfoot is the anomaly most commonly found in the newborns in the city of MaceiÃ, followed by polydactilia. The anomaly least commonly found is calcaneovalgus foot
