RESUMO

The purpose of this in vitro study was to examine the effects of different bleaching procedures on dentin temperature rise, enamel color alteration and surface morphology of teeth. Bovine tooth samples of standardized thickness (2,0mm with similar dentin and enamel thickness) were prepared and stained with black tea before being submitted to different treatments: in-office bleaching using 35% hydrogen peroxide, placebo gel or no gel application with or without LED, halogen or argon laser light activation. The light sources were applied during 30 seconds above enamel surface, and the temperature rise was measured on dentin surface with an infrared thermometer. Colorimetric measurements were performed on enamel surface, according to the CIEL*a*b* system, before and after staining as well as after the treatments (immediately, 24 hours and 1 week later). Enamel surface alterations in the bleached and unbleached teeth were studied using a scanning electron microscope. Most groups presented the dentin highest temperature at 50 seconds. The halogen light induced significantly higher temperature increases than any other curing unit. Significant differences in lightness value were obtained for the 35% hydrogen peroxide agent with all light sources or without a light source. None of the teeth studied showed detectable surface changes in the subsequent SEM (2000X) analysis of the enamel surface. In-office bleaching procedure is efficient with or without the application of a light source and the studied treatment techniques did not create any detectable enamel surface changes.
