RESUMO

The aim of this study is to analyze the history of English teaching in the city of Recife from 1946 to 1971. The concept of Linguistic Imperialism was used as a tool to analyze the development of this markedly hegemonic foreign language. To carry out this research language teachers were interviewed, and books and articles on the theme were consulted, as were historical documents and textbooks from the time period. It was found that anglocentricity and professionalism, which legitimize the position of English as a dominant language by rationalizing activities and beliefs that contribute to cultural and structural inequalities between English and other languages, developed through: increased North American presence in Recife in the form of cultural goods and physical presence; diffusion of the audiolingÃal approach, supported by the government of the United States and centered on the teaching of the linguistic structures of English; and changes in educational legislation, which made language teaching optional instead of mandatory, reduced secondary studies by one year and increased the number of mandatory subjects, leading to the withdrawal of English teaching from the majority of public schools. This change in school structure, coupled with increasing anti-American and anti-Imperial sentiment promoted by the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) created a market for private English language courses in Recife, increasing the status of the English language and its connection to ideologies associated with industrial capitalism and transforming it into a transcendental signifier. Through a review of the ideologies present in the Instituto Superior de Estudos Brasileiros and the PCB, however, it was found that Robert PhillipsonÂs concept of Linguistic Imperialism is relevant, but ignores the participation of social sectors outside the center of the Center and the center of the Periphery in the internalization of the ideology of English
