RESUMO

This research aims at analyzing the socio-environmental problem and the consequences to the workers at the emerald mining fields located in Campos Verdes to the north of the state of Goias Brazil. The area being studied is situated between the parallels 14.25 and 14.30 degrees of south latitude and the meridians of 49.55 and 50.55 degrees of west longitude, where an emerald outcrop was found in 1981. The intense activity of extracting emerald gave origin to a not well-planned settlement of the land, near to the spring water river-borders. Significant alterations in the fluvial environment was noticed (canals or minor river-banks), such as: diminishment of the riverbanks and accumulation of dumped material, deposit of disposed material in some areas near the river Landi and the Valetão area and the erosive effects, in the sectors, New and Old. The picture presented related to the environmental matter demanded an integrated study, for, the mining population is placed in a context of risks and vulnerability as aggressor and victim of the environment, due to the depth of the mining fields (300 and 400m) and because of the diseases and accidents occurred in the underground mine. This research was based in the methodological proposal of Socio-environmental Geography and Geographys Health. In order to investigate environmental damages the data was obtained from official institutions and the Geographical Information System Arcview 3.2, was used in order to map the mining area. Besides the in locus research, it was made observations and photographical registers, also, 28 miners were interviewed, 05 partners/owners and one health professional, in order to verify probable risks to the health due to the underground conditions. From the 28 miners interviewed some of them had already suffered a type of accident (flood, fall of equipment and block). From these, 17 (60%) were inactive and were under silicosis treatment. In this context, it was observed that it is necessary a management plan to the region, for the environmental matters as well as the improvement of the conditions of health and a health program specialized for the active and inactive miners.
