RESUMO

Dentofacial deformities (DFD) not only interfere with ones functional conditions and facial aesthetics, but also with the individuals personality, attitudes and behavior, so that the dissatisfaction generated by his/her appearance may trigger psychological problems and worse life quality. Nevertheless, no study has so far investigated the degree in which dissatisfaction with the body image is related to QOL. This study aims at analyzing the characteristics of body image and quality of life (QOL), in individuals presented with DFD, taking into account gender, age, facial pattern, as well as the relation between body image and QOL. Thirty individuals presented with DFD, that is, 18 females and 12 males, were studied, being 12 with type II facial pattern and 18 with pattern III, undergoing presurgical orthodontic treatment, in the age range 18 - 40 years ( x =28.98 yrs). A Control Group was comprised by 30 subjects, for comparisons with the DFD Group. The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination (BDDE), comprising 34 questions which measure the degree of dissatisfaction related to a given physical characteristic, was applied for body image analysis, and the questionnaire Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), composed of 14 questions addressing seven categories (Functional Limitation, Physical Pain, Psychological Discomfort, Physical, Psychological and Social Limitation, and Impairment), was applied for QOL analysis. The results showed that the DFD Group presented the highest body image dissatisfaction level and the worst QOL, as compared to the CG, being that 26.6% of the DFD Group presented high levels of dissatisfaction with the body image; among the categories of the OHIP-14, Psychological Discomfort, Psychological Limitation, Physical Pain and Physical Limitation were the most observed impacts in the DFD Group. A significant correlation pointed that both Facial Pattern II and Facial Pattern III, had a negative impact on BI and QOL. Regarding the gender, DFD affects more women, in relation to dissatisfaction with body image and worse QOL, than men. It was concluded that there is relation between IC and QOL, that is the greater the dissatisfaction with the IC, the worse the QOL in Group DDF.
