RESUMO

This dissertation consists of an analysis of the argumentation of the priests of the Universal Church ofthe Kingdom ofGod in two programs shown at Record TV: Network - The Holy Service in your Home, whose subject is being a Christian , and Word of life, whose subject is prosperity. Our theorical viewpoint is the one of the Historical Semantics of the Utterance Act, as it is presented by Eduardo Guimarães. This approach which is affiliated to the French School ofDiscourse Analysis takes the meaning of an utterance act as constituted in historically-built places - the discourses. With the consideration of history as constituent of meaning, speech is analysed on two levels - the one of its constitution, which is called interdiscourse, and the one of its formulation, that on which the subject verbalizes his mearungs. Argumentation, which takes place on the level of formulation, is an effect of the relation between discourses; the intentions of the subject when arguing are constituted in his historical memory, in positions of meaning that he necessarily takes, although uncounsciously. Thus in our perspective arguing is not persuading or convincing someone; it is the direction of speech, the unification of interpretation in gestures that produce the effect that what was said: 1) could only have been formulated in that way, and 2) was originated in the individual, and not as a historical process of meaning. In our corpus we identified a semantic procedure in the building of argumentation a mechanism of definition which is carried out through predication. The priests define (and by defining they build as referents) some key-concepts in the argumentation of the Universal Church, such as God , devil , carnal Christian , true Christian , prosperity , etc. The definitions are formulated by means of two kinds of predicates: paraphrastic and exegetic. Paraphrastic predicates resound with the meanings of each other and/or of the referents they build. Exegetic predicates give social visibility to these referents. Together both kinds of predicates work as arguments and conclusions, making an argumentative web.In the intertextual analysis between the two programs we observed that the referents take new meanings according to the conditions of production of each of the programs. The Holy Service in your Home is recorded in a service in the national headquarters of the Universal Church; Word oi Life is made for TV exhibition and is shown live. This difference brings a change in the interlocutors of the priests - in the first program, they are the congregation of the church; in the second, they are a potential congregation. With this change the aims of the programs are also different and the referents which build argumentation mean differently. On each program and between the two of them we identified contradictions in the argumentation. The directing of meaning is set off in basically two places of meaning constitution - capitalist and liberal discourses. The contradictions are an indication that argumentation does not assure persuasion, since The Universal Church, the evangelic religion which grows fastest in Brazil, is founded upon a contradictory speech.
