RESUMO

The study of shapes as a tool of analysis in design, based on matching possibilities of elements and operations, can disclose generation strategies of particular shapes from a determined architect. These strategies can, once proved its existence, characterize a style that can be used in the generation of new compositions in architecture. The method known as Shape Grammar*, has been used in the analysis of designs of recognized architects. It is intended in this research, with the use of this method, to interpret rules that define a language and identify elements that define design patterns in the work of an architect not yet studied and recognized. To certify the existence of underlying logic in the set of his work, or in phases of it, is also the goal of this study. A study of the chosen method was implemented by the analysis of available literature on related works. Then a research of data-collecting on the architect, his building designs and influences was made. The designs that compose the corpus of the research had been selected, redesigned and modeled in 3D. An exercise of application of Shape Grammar then was carried through, with the identification of the rules that, combined, had disclosed elements and procedures that characterize the language of the architect and its influences. To the end of the exercise, new rules had been created, thus making possible the generation of two new designs in the identified language, in a didactic application of the research accomplished
