RESUMO

This study is centered on the motive of traveling and its central relevance in Portuguese literature. Idas e Vindas focuses on sea expansion occurred since the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries; the second half of the nineteenth century, when theres a more explicit crises generated by the expansionist model and by the failure of the progress notion and, finally, the final decades of the twentieth century, when the reconfiguration of the global economy, with the disappearance of a bipolar world, reverberates hardly on culture. Emphasizing the look of one who stays on the land waiting for the ones who left, the reflection follows a specific way: the intention of highlighting, among the determinant causes of the travel, the poverty resulting from the administrative mistakes and negligences. This search is to articulate history and fiction in order to bound decisive phases in the construction of the Portuguese cultural history.
