RESUMO

The goal of this work was to study the hydrological potential of the Monte Olimpo Watershed on Campus Luiz de Queiroz of the University of São Paulo. This watershed is located entirely on the Campus, where good water quality can be stored in two reservoirs. Due to the lack of soil conservation practices and environment concerns this watershed is much degraded. The water supplied to the Campus comes from two main sources, the first one, it is the Piracicaba River, where the water is mostly polluted and for its treatment are used large amounts of chemical products, which results in high cost. The second one is from the Monte Olimpo River, which has its source and mouth inside the Campus. Monte Olimpo creek, can have good water quality if its water productivity potential is reestablished using soil conservation practices and protecting the buffer areas. For this reason, it was decided to monitor the water quality and quantity through chemical and physical analyses, and also the outflow measurements at specific points. A triangular spillway was set at about 18 meters upstream from the mouth. It was concluded that the Monte Olimpo watershed has been under a very strong degrading process, with sediments, fertilizers and organic matter carried out through erosion process. The creek has a potential to produce enough water for the demand of the Campus from August to May, and on the remaining period it partially satisfies the actual needs. In order to reestablish its potential it will be necessary to remove the sediment accumulated for more 30 years in the reservoir, implement the buffer areas with trees and soil conservation on the steep, also environment education program. The recovery of the creek Monte Olimpo is mandatory, since the water supply in the whole Piracicaba Watershed reached 400m3hab.ano-1, during the dry season, which will probably reduce on the next decade. An urgent internal policy must be implemented.
