RESUMO

This study sought to comprehend the experiences of elderly women treated as in-patients at a public hospital in the city of Fortaleza-Ce. The individual hospital experience of these women in the period between September and November 2006, served as a basis for understanding of the ways in which elderly women identify and attribute meaning to the humanization/dehumanization of the hospital stay experienced. Listening to and analyzing their statements, through open interviews of an ethnographic nature, using guiding questions, were the main resources used for collection of data. Nine women formed the group of key informants at the hospital. An attempt was also made to understand the perception that elderly women have of ageing, the suffering they undergo, strategies they use to overcome this and what they understand by a good life. To obtain these data, open interviews with guiding questions were used. Four elderly women from different social classes, were the key informants of this research. Two of them, coming from the so-called upper middle class, were interviewed in their homes. The other two, being extremely poor, were interviewed in a classroom at a school located in the community where they live. For data collection in these different scenarios, a qualitative approach was used, and analysis was based on interpretative anthropology. The data revealed showed that although practices considered humanized were present at the hospital, the institutional violence revealed by informants narratives shows the lack of concern for compliance with the guidelines on rights in policies for protection of the elderly. It was also revealed that although ageing for elderly women is synonymous with social isolation, limitation of activities and ill health, the very experience of life accumulated provides them with the means to face the losses and changes which occur throughout life, whether by accepting or fighting against them, as well as seeking spiritual comfort through prayer.
