RESUMO

During the first decades of the 19th century in Brazil, the institutionalization of healing practices took place, side by side with the search for natural resources and its economic exploitation. Those two processes interacted in a very dynamic way. The knowledge about and the uses of medicinal plants and herbs, which existed since the beginning of the colonization, had at this moment a very important role, being part of the building of science in Brazil, through the interaction of State, scientists, doctors, different healers and travelers. Describing the activities and writings of botanist and traveler Antonio Moniz de Souza, who traveled during the period around many parts of Brazil, observing and classifying natural drugs that would be, later on, distributed to medical doctors, practitioners, scholars and scientific institutions in the country, I intend to discuss those questions here. Reconstructing the activities of Moniz and the diffusion of the medicinal plants use at the beginning of the 19th century in Brazil is a way of contributing to the studies of the medical practices in Bahia and Brazil, allowing a discussion about the cultural dynamics between different social groups a theme of fundamental importance to the studies of the Social History of Culture, area which this work belongs, questioning the process of the making and development of medicine and science in Brazil.
