RESUMO

This dissertation was elaborated prioritising the photographic images as sources and was entitled History and Image: the Society Written with Light. Rio de Janeiro (1840 1889). From the analysis of photographs from the second half of the 19th century this study searches to perceive the production of Rio de Janeiro as a modern and picturesque city at the same time, as well as of the society engendered in this space. This construction results from the dialogue/confrontation between two kinds of languages: the photography which focuses the modern side, and the travel literature which focuses the picturesque/exotic, without the exclusion of none of these two aspects by those speeches. Besides, the attentive reading of such sources allowed to comprehend the configuration of the modern and civilized deportment in Rio de Janeiros society, expressed by its manners, vogue and customs, where to seem was more important than to be. Finally, in this changes caused by modernization, it is possible to notice the enlargement of the spaces of sociability and sociality, revealed and also produced by the images. The amplification of the visibility of women, who started to circulate in public spaces where they werent allowed to transit before was one of the several effects of modernization. A process in which production and circulation of images had a great importance, once they not only figured sceneries/people but especially taught how to figure them, educating the view of the observer of the Rio de Janeiros citizen.
