RESUMO

The present study aims at accounting for the historical process of formal aboriginal education in the Ñandeva-Guarani community of the Porto Lindo Reserve, in the municipality of Japorã ? MS. Two data sources have been used: documents and interviews. From the initial mapping of the issue under study based on the document sources, six teachers have been interviewed ? three aborigines and three non-aborigines. Research focused on the period from 1960 up to recent days, though documental data going back to Brazil?s colonial period related to the region have also been included. The presentation of the findings starts with a historical view of the Guarani community in the State of Southern Mato Grosso from the 16th up to the 21st centuries and then focuses on the Nandeva-Guarani community itself and the creation of the school in the Porto Lindo Reserve. The way the implantation of the school has started in this community, as referred to in the documents and interviews, and the teaching practices ? especially with regard to meanings taken on by the aborigines based on the knowledge transmitted therein ? enable the identification of some of the problems related to aborigine education in general as well as to the education practiced in the community in question. Hereupon some questions have arisen that, as is hoped for, may help future researchers on both aborigine education in general and, in specific, on the course of formal education among the Ñandeva- Guaranis of the Porto Lindo Reserve.
