RESUMO

This objective of this work was to study the combining ability of summer squash lines selected for parthenocarpy and resistance to Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV-W), and the expression of heterosis in hybrids derived from them. The genetic material comprised 24 genotypes of Cucurbita pepo L. in a partial diallel cross design - four group I parental lines, four group II parental lines, and 16 F1 hybrids obtained from crosses between group I x group II lines. The lines in group I were 1=ABX-037G-77-03-05-01-01-bulk, 2=ABX-037G-77-03-05-03-10-bulk, 3=ABX-037G-77-03-05-01-04-bulk and 4=ABX-037G-77-03-05-05-01-bulk; those in group II were 1 =ABX-037G-77-03-05-04-08-bulk, 2 =ABX-037G-77-03-05-02-11-bulk, 3 =Clarice and 4 =Caserta. Parthenocarpy and resistance to PRSV-W were evaluated through scales graded from 1 to 5. The following horticultural traits were also evaluated: total yield (ton.ha-1), mean fruit mass (g.fruit-1), number of fruits per plant, and early yield (ton.ha-1). The experimental setup was a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Both additive and non-additive gene effects were important in the expression of parthenocarpy and resistance to PRSV-W. Heterosis values for parthenocarpy were usually in the direction of higher degrees os parthenocarpy, while for resistance to PRSV-W they were in the direction of lower degree of resistance. At least one experimental F1 hybrid (=ABX-037G-77-03-05-01-01-bulk x ABX-037G-77-03-05-04-08-bulk) was identified with good degrees of parthenocarpy, resistance to PRSV-W , and high yield.
