RESUMO

Paraphrase is here defined as a linguistic process through which texts are constituted and organized. This study of oral and written portuguese texts shows that Nominal Phrases (NPs) which establish such relations of semantic equi valence function as a mechanism of textual cohesion (reference and sequence) . The analysis of the functioning of NPs in text organization leads to an initial syntactic examination of the constituents of the NP that are related to paraphrasing (Chapter 1), resulting in an approach which utilizes three syntactic categories of analysis: the phrase leveI (Chapter 2), the sentence leveI (Chapter 3), and the intersentential leveI (Chapter 4). The classification of NPs presented considers not only the syntactic relations of symmetry and a symmetry between the elements paraphrased but also two semantic types of paraphrasing resulting from the NPs: referential and inferential (Chapter 4). An NP typology isthen proposed (Chapter 5) which is based on the nature of the morphological, semantic-Iexical, semantic-pragmatic and metalinguistic relations within the text; the concepts of Theme and Rheme are used to explore the importance of the role of NPs in thematic progression from a functional perspective of language in the final chapter.
