RESUMO

The activities of producing software are considered knowledge-intensive; therefore, not only researchers but also managers have begun focusing their attention on the management of knowledge in software producing companies as a means of bettering the process of developing products and services. This involves both institucionalization of knowledge processes and the establishment of management strategies to improve the learning capacity of the firm and its ability to combine its organizational capabilities based on knowledge. This research work identify the activities that involve the acquisition, maintenance, dissemination and storage processes of knowledge in software companies and points out the principal factors that can influence the success of knowledge management strategies. Specially two strategies proposed by Hansen, Nohria e Tierney (1999) are considered: one based on computerized database, stated codification strategy, and other based on personal networking, stated personalization strategy. Three software development companies were interviewed and the outcomes of the cases studies point, among others, to some main contributions: the framework for knowledge management and main individual and organizational factors that influence the knowledge management strategy.
