RESUMO

The present paper aims at evaluating the experience of communitarian management of domiciliary solid residues with emphasis in the organic fraction and the impacts generated in the community located in the neighborhood of Plataforma, a railroad suburb of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The evaluation was based on qualitative and quantitative methods. Interviews were used as a technique for the collection of qualitative data. They were conducted after some actions had been observed. These actions had influenced people?s behavior in regard to the handling of solid residues in the domicile. A total of 406 questionnaires were applied for the collection of quantitative data. The impacts caused by the Project in the community were positive, but the existing difficulties have to be taken into consideration for the ideal functioning of the Project. These difficulties were caused by insufficient logistics and financial support, which frequently made the accomplishment of some important activities impracticable. Despite the difficulties faced, and considering the Municipal State?s share of responsibility for such service, the communitarian management of solid domiciliary residues makes it possible for a greater participation of locals. The decision-making process is also benefited because it can take into account the needs of the place and it can yield a larger amount of agents, not to mention the increased availability of information concerning the solid residues matter.
