RESUMO

The aim of this research is to identify an economic activity that can improve and/or to use the main water resource of Presidente Juscelino city, MG: the Paraúna River; to propose a mechanism that may contribute to the reduction of consumption of controlled drugs in women (especially antidepressants and ant anxiety); to improve the economic conditions of the population, and also, improve the quality of life. Initially, a survey was done of medical prescription prescribed at the Health Center of Presidente Juscelino, MG. Next, a questionnaire was conducted to observe the gender and socio-economic conditions of the population. To verify the conditions of Paraúna River, some water quality parameters were analyzed (pH, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, search for total coliform and thermotolerant coliform). The water quality of Paraúna River has been inadequate for agriculture and recreational activities. Two types of the craft activities were held to discover one most adequate to the local population. The recycling of plastic bottles type PET (Politereftalato de etileno) (one of the major polluters of the tributaries of the Paraúna River) and the production of poufs from them were essayed. Both have not had much success due to difficulties in storage, transportation to the recyclers centers and the difficulty of marketing poufs (thick cushion used as a seat). At last, the production of soap was the most acceptable by its immediate applicability, ease of marketing and major ecological benefit, since it uses raw material, such the soybean oil for frying, tallow and so on. By carrying out specific training, and being an activity with relatively immediate results, women were organized into groups and began producing soap, weekly. With this occupation, many are happier and more selfconfident since their labor can produce something that is used by everyone, even by themselves. Some have already reported, during the weekly meetings, that they are reducing the consumption of antidepressant an ant anxiety drugs.
