RESUMO

The first oil crisis in 1973 marks the beginning of a new era in the intemational economy. One of the outcomes was the decoupling effect noted between economic growth and energy demand, forcing a revision of traditional models of energy planning. In the context, the Demand Side Management (DSM) became a very important planning instrument for many electricity companies. With the support of the environment policies, DSM became an effective instrument for the improvement of the efficient use of energy. This study analyses the case of urban centers (Manaus, Macapá and Porto Velho) of the Amazon Region, which present serlous problems for the continuing supply of their electricity service. Household appliance ownership and uses were characterized by means of a survey. Further analysis was developed associating socio-economic protiles and several energy indicators, and a detailed end use energy demand structure was elaborated. In this work we also compare the energy performance of the several household appliances and discuss the available commercial economic potential for energy conservation. We show that there is a significant potential for introducing more efficient technologies yielding economic benefits to consumers and utilities. Considering only investment opportunities in more efficient appliances that yield a 20% internal rate of retum per year, it would be possible, in tive years, to lower 13.6% the consumption and 15.4% the residential peak load. These impacts increase over time, as the stock of appliances is renewed. After complete reposition of the stock, one estimates that the savings would attain 22%
