RESUMO

Integrated application of geochemical and sedimentary geochronology in pelitic rock samples from the basal section of the northeastern Brazilian continental margin, especially those of the Paleozoic and pre-rift sequences is the main goal of this thesis. The results are presented and discussed in three technical articles. Two of these articles present the Rb-Sr methodology applied to fine-grained sedimentary rocks in order to determine the depositional age. Samples of the Paleozoic and prerift sections of the Recôncavo and Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, stratigraphically positioned at the basal portion of the Afligidos (Cazumba Member), Aliança (Capianga Member), Bananeiras and Itaparica formations, were analyzed. Concerning the obtained data for samples of the Aliança and Itaparica formations (Recôncavo Basin) and Bananeiras Formation (Sergipe-Alagoas Basin) there are significant implications to the paleogeographic schemes earlier established for these basins and also other correlated basins. These sedimentary units were traditionally considered as being of Neojurassic age and know a Neotriassic age is proposed. The third article discusses the integration of chemical compositions and isotopic ratios of Sr and Nd in samples of five outcrops of pelitic rocks of the Camamu Basin. Interactions of these analytical tools have been considered as useful parameters to estimate not only their provenance but also to make inferences about the depositional environment and weathering processes. By analyzing the chemical composition of the samples, it was inferred that the outcrops studied represented the same sedimentary unit and that they might be correlated to the Capianga Member of the Aliança Formation of the Recôncavo Basin. The values obtained to chemical index of alteration (CIA) can be related to conditions associated with a humid tropical/subtropical climate. Nd isotopes indicated the Paleoproterozoic rocks of the Sao Francisco craton as source area. So the association of chemical and isotopic analyses is useful to characterize and correlate homogeneous sedimentary sequences. Finally, this study emphasizes that some of the tectonic and stratigraphic concepts actually accepted to these basins should be reviewed in the light of these Triassic ages proposed and extensively distributed in northeastern Brazil and their northwestern African counterparts.
