RESUMO

The great deal of rubbish production is, currently, one of the biggest worldwide problems and it tends to aggravate due to the high number of people in the globe and to the type of our productive system. Parallel to the solid residues increase, it also happens a reduction of available areas for its disposal and a raise of urban ground prices. It is what has occurred in Fortalezas micro region: besides having an intense process of conurbation, this diminishing urban emptiness, still counts on a great amount of fragile geosystems, such as dune fields, fluvial plains and fluvial-rivers, that contributes for the scarcity of areas for the installation of dumpsters. Solid residue deposits causes ambient and economic impacts of such order that they compromise the quality of life of the population living nearby. Because of this, they must be constructed in areas previously studied, in order to minimize their negative consequences. The multiplicity of criteria to be considered to in choosing those areas to be filled with earth (declivity, hydrograph, hydrogeology, distance of the urban nuclei, etc.) make the geoprocessament, specially the Geographic Information System, a decisive instrument for taking of decisions, with great capacity of crossing a great number of information, fast and precise. The method used at this project consists of identifying and gradually excluding areas that do not attend to the legal restrictions or the pre-selected technical specifications for the construction of dumpsters. After exclusions were made, the areas were classified as advisable, advisable with restrictions, non-advisable and forbidden. The final result of this project is a map with these four types of areas that demonstrates how complex is the selection of dumpsters and that there are only a few areas available to this purpose. Moreover, it shows effective and rapid ways to study spaces candidates to the construction of such urban equipments, since the Geographic Information System makes the study of Earth surface more dynamic, saves time and money and provides more reliable results.
