RESUMO

An ecological study was developed to describe the incidence of aids/ tuberculosis co-infection in São Paulo State, between 1996 and 2005, according to its spatial distribution. The territorial base was 645 municipalities grouped in 63 micro regions as stated by the official division of IBGE (Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics). Incidence rates of aids and aids/ tuberculosis co-infection were taken as disease measures. HDI, HDI-life expectancy, HDI-education and HDI-income were calculated to each micro region as populations human development indexes. Between 1996 and 2005, 81,841 cases of aids and 16,759 cases of aids/ tuberculosis co-infection were notified. Males were 65.49% of notified cases of aids; 61.46% of all cases were between 25 and 39 years old; heterosexual transmission was responsible for 52.81% of cases; 53.42% presented between one and seven years of schooling; micro regions with greater aids incidence rate (cases per 100.000 persons over 14 years old) were Ribeirão Preto (490,41), Barretos (489,42), São José do Rio Preto (464,08), Santos (459,22) e Caraguatatuba (402,84). Males were 73.92% of reported cases of aids/ tuberculosis co-infection; 77.09% were between 25 and 44 years old; 57.10% presented between one and seven years of schooling; micro regions with greater aids incidence rate (cases per 100.000 persons over 15 years old) were Santos (136,35) Caraguatatuba (88,67) São Paulo (87,45), São José dos Campos (72,64) e Ribeirão Preto (70,97). São Paulo micro region presented the highest value of HDI (0.835); Nhandeara the highest HDI-life expectancy (0.843); São José dos Campos the highest HDI-education (0.897); São Paulo the highest HDI-income (0.835); micro regions in the south and southwest of the state of São Paulo showed the lowest values of HDI, HDI-life expectancy, HDI-education and HDIincome. The spatial distribution patterns of aids and aids/ tuberculosis co-infection were different from the patterns of HDI, HDI-life expectancy, HDI-education and HDIincome.
