RESUMO

The objective of this study is to describe how the place attachment occurs by male drug addicts, who are temporarily accommodated in a non-governmental organization, as well as identify other phenomena relevant to environmental psychology also present in this transitional environment. To do this, we used the concept of place attachment proposed by Pol (2002), which implies a circular pattern composed by the dimensions of action-transformation and symbolic identification, considering behavior and cognitive, affective and identity aspects in the construction process of the meaning of space. Participants were four people, male, aged between 30 and 40 years old and a qualitative approach was chosen in order to conceive that the investigation of the environments of treatment for addiction can bring awareness about the interaction of people with the institutions and the effects arising from this interaction. We calculated the partial replication of the Bassanis methodological proposal (2003a, 2004b) and we used the following methods: thematic interviews (semi-directed), direct observation and photographic records. Data collection was performed in a Non-Governmental Organization of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo which hosts temporarily addicts for treatment. From the analysis of results, the place attachment can be described by the following characteristics: 1) the importance of organized work in the institution, developed with well established norms and rules, 2) the limitations of transformation in the environment institution, derived from the rules, 3) site selection more meaningful by the participants in the institution is mainly because they can transform the environment, 4) the marking of the chosen space occurs through the insertion of physical elements that reflect personal characteristics of participants , 5) the importance of the temporal dimension in the process of welcoming, the place where the participants are from, adding the family in the treatment process and the institution as a transitional space. Suggestions are presented for further researches to be developed, considering the relevance of these studies and also to align these with the public policies that address the importance of space to host
