RESUMO

This investigation analyses the theoretical and practical interface between textual genres used in social-communicative actions that actually happen and genres that are object of teaching and learning practices in Portuguese for Specific Purposes (PSP) classes, at the Centro Federal de EducaÃÃo TecnolÃgica de Pernambuco, CEFET-PE. Teaching practice in professional education demands a special work with genres which, in school, goes far beyond the syllabus of the PSP course to spread its influence over more technical disciplines, and, outside school, might understand to a large extent the relations underlying social structures, especially all social-discursive practices that are part of those structures. In order to fulfill these objectives, I started the investigation with a historical approach to genre conceptions in rhetoric, poetics and linguistics, based on the perspective of Bakhtin (1992); following Miller (1994), Meurer (2000), Marcuschi (2000, 2002) and Bazermanâs (2005, 2006) social account of genre, I applied the concept of genre as social action to the social structures observed in some areas such as the ones of services, industry and civil engineering; established the relationship between genres taught in professional education at CEFET-PE and those of everyday use in working place based on Bronckartâs (1999, 2006) social-discursive interacionism; and, finally, analyzed genres of the professional sphere in the contexts they are actually produced, pointing out the activities they organize, ritualize and standardize, always taking into consideration their discursive and linguistic aspects. Findings show that these genres have great pedagogic potential since they constitute real socio-communicative forms that enable studentsâ professional development and help them enter the working world
