RESUMO

This work is a study about football (soccer) supporters groups. It consists of a combination of bibliography research and a field study. The field study was done among spectators and fans of the Palmeiras Sport Club of Sao Paulo during the 1996 Brazilian Championship. The Elias &Dunning approach was used as the main theoretical reference that they make to the sports , specifically about soccer. A study of this nature is necessary, knowing that watching soccer games is the world s most practised sport leisure activity , therefore, the study about the theme, soccer and their devotees is vital to the study of the Leisure Activity field. Especially in Brazil, this study has social relevance, where the violence is seen very often in the stadiums nowadays. The research utilizes configurational sociology and its categories. The macro analysis served as a base study in order to better understand the sport as a leisure activity and also, how this sport s profissionalization has been transformed into a leisure activity, always considering the importance that has been given to the spectators and fans which are the fundamental categories of our work. Consequently, this is the only way to have a contextual understanding of the meaning of the Brazilian definition of soccer according to the authors cited throughout the bibliography, which also includes some questions like: the woman as a player, a spectator and a fan. Among other things, we can conclude that the kind of violence expressed by the fans of the Palmeiras Sport Club during the 1996 Brazilian Championship was symbolic violence. Although, the symbolic violenceis acceptable and satisfactory to the Brazilian Society, we must be concerned with the implementation of security measures that would avoid turning the symbolic violence into real violence, ever conscientious of the fact that the symbolic violence is the main cause of the real violence. This is the point at which the symbolic violence agents loose control of their actions, moreover the violence can be transformed from a form of game and simulation into a manifestation of violence
