RESUMO

This master dissertation has the problematization of liberty as ethos, in the late works of Michel Foucault, as its subject matter. In the first part, some fundamental concepts are analysed in order to understand the changes in Foucaults thought, in the late 1970s. Then, his concept of moral and his investigations about Antique aesthetics of existence and culture of the self are analysed. In the second part, the assertion that freedom is the fundamental bet of Foucaults thought is the starting point for an analysis of the question of ethics in modernity. In order to do this, its done an analysis of the concepts of thought and liberty as well as the relation among modernity, moral and criticism. At last, through th e Foucaults interviews for gay magazines, it is analysed the way in wich the foucauldian proposal of an ethics that is an aesthetics of existence can work outside of the specific range of philosophical practice.
