RESUMO

In the theoretical landscape of discursive semiology (Discourse Analysis) this dissertation tries to understand the mechanisms involved in the production of meaning of the non-verbal speeches in the mass media communication. To do so, the analysis focuses its attention in the photo-journalistic speech and in its contribution for the development of a relationship between the press media and its readers. Besides that, through a case study based on the ?A Tarde? news paper, the present research proposes some general lines to develop an analytical methodology of news photography and points out the working elements in photo journalism. Thus, in the dissertation?s last chapter, starting from a body of work composed of editions published between June of 2002 and May of 2003, the thesis points out some recurring illustrative traits very often presents in A Tardes photographs, delineating the participation of those images in the discursive positioning of the news paper analysis.
