RESUMO
Photodegradation of natural organic compounds ubiquitous in samples from the Atibaia River, sewage, sea (São Sebastião - S.P.) and comercial humic acid was investigated in laboratory, where the photolysis condition was similar to that of natural systems. A synthetic sample (tryptophan) has been used as a model to validate the methods as well as photolysis conditions. lt has been found that the photodegradation of organic matter is dependent upon its concentration and nature, and is favored in alkaline conditions. Organic matter interactions with copper, iron and cadmium has also been investigated. The spike of 10 M Cu(II) in the Atibaia River water samples markedly inhibited the oxidative process whilst Fe(III) and Cd(II) did not show any measurable effect in the photodegradation. The data indicate that the complex Cu(II)-organic matter is far more resistant to photodegradation than the complexes formed with cadmium and iron. This implies in a higher mobility as well as bioavailability of copper in the aquatic systems. In sea water samples, the behavior due to the adition of 10M Cu (II) was similar to the process describe above, indicating that this increase in mobility and bioavailability occurred in both fresh and sea water.
