RESUMO

At the end of the war against West India Company (West Indische Compagnie â WIC), in 1654, the Captaincie of Pernambuco and a great part of the Nothern Brazil were devastated. The disorder of economic and social system made part of this post war set. In Portugal the situation was not different. Portugal was still fighting against the Spanish Empire to maintain its independence and was also involved in a negotiation over the Dutch troop surrender in Brazil. For the Portuguese Crown it was necessary to make new political and military actions in order to keep what was left of its Empire. The purpose of this thesis is to perceive how these changes in the politics of Portuguese defense had consequences in the reform of the military power in Pernambuco, specifically on the issue of fortification, in the first decades after 1654.
