RESUMO

A person who seeks psychological support receives help from a professional with a repertoire to use procedures that lead to behavioral changes, thus reducing suffering. Since results obtained by the therapeutic process are influenced by the therapists capacity, dedication is essential. Little information however is available, especially in Brazil, regarding effectiveness of methods currently used in training programs for beginning therapists. An investigation with the objective of evaluating the use of a behavior-analytic therapist performance checklist was carried out among students of the University of São Paulo enrolled in a specialization course. This instrument provides roles for therapist performance, it is a guide for observing sessions and helps in evaluating therapist behavior. Nine pairs of therapists took part in this research. Procedure consisted of self-observation and self-evaluation through videotaped sessions using the above-mentioned checklist. After each session, therapists watched the tapes, discussed their performance and registered their evaluation. In order to verify if changes in performances were due to these procedures, a multiple baseline design through participants was used throughout 13 sessions. Data suggest that this instrument had a certain positive effect on the general performance and particularly on performance related to data collection and establishment of therapeutic alliance. For performance related to strategies of intervention, however, these effects were not observed. Considerations relative to other variables that could have influenced results such as clinic experience, supervisor style and type of clinical problem were presented. Certain reservations on the instrument validity, reliability and questioning on differences in usage by therapist of various levels of experience were raised. Concluding, issues related to further studies are addressed and a new version of the instrument is suggested.
