Formação de competências e a prática profissional : um estudo de caso do Curso de Desenho Industrial da PUC-PR

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to analyze the competencies developed by the academic program of Industrial Design at Pontifical Catholic University of Parana-PUCPR and their relevance for the professional practices based on the perception of its alumni. This research is defined as a case study having its focus on the undergraduate program of Industrial Design at PUCPR, examining the competencies stressed by the curriculum and its contribution to the development of professional activities according to the perception of its former students. A group of former students of the program, who graduated in the period of 1997 and 2002, was selected to be part of this research. Primary data was obtained through the Internet by applying a structured instrument, using the Likert scale. Sentences were organized related to the competencies formally stressed by eight dimensions of the curriculum of the program of Industrial Design along with sentences related to the importance of the competencies for professional practices. Secondary data was also used in this study and was based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Education analysis related to the curriculum and competencies of the Industrial Design Program and the Pedagogical Project of the same Program set by the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná-PUCPR. Data analysis revealed that the respondents agreed that the competenceis developed by the program of Industrial Design under eight dimensions of the curriculum were effectively developed and are important for professional practices. Similarities among the competencies stressed by the program and those demanded by professional life have been observed. In the “creativity” dimension, 49,3% of those surveyed agreed that the ability to deal with unforessen events was emphasized by the program. All the respondents agreed that the competencies related to deal with unforeseen events is a very importance one for professional practices. Methodology was another competence stressed by the program according to the perception of 69,6% of the respondents and it was considered to be critical for professional practices by 94,2% of them. According to the respondents, the biggest divergences between the competences stressed by the academic program and those required for professional practices are related to the free-handed application of concepts and interaction with other professionals. In relation to the former, 43% of the respondents disagreed with the emphasis the Program on it and 82,6% found it important for professional practice. As for the latter, 63,8% of the respondents disagreed with the emphasis the program gives to it, while 100% of them considered it fundamental for professional practices. Competencies such as the development of new technologies, entrepreneurship, management and the conciliation of dimensions among the global and the regional ones with due respect to the cultural differences have also been considered not to competencies fully stressed by the program. The conclusions drawn from this research point out that the undergraduate program of Industrial Design at PUCPR is developing competencies which are relevant for professional practices of its students, although some dimensions need more emphasis and improvement. At the end, suggestions are made for future research in this area along with some final considerations by the researcher.
